Marrying Man of the Month: Michael Jordan

Our Marrying Man of the Month (although he actually got hitched last month) is basketball icon Michael Jordan. Considered by many to be the best basketball player of all time, Jordan _ often called MJ by his friends, tied the knot with his girlfriend of five years, Yvette Prieto. The wedding, the second for Jordan, took place on April 27, 2013 in a massively huge party tent pitched near his Palm Beach home. NBA fame can buy a really flashy wedding; reports are saying that the tent used to create a reception space is actually the largest tent ever used in the history of weddings. The ginormous 40,000 square-foot tent measures in at 5,000 larger than the coupleÍs home! Anywhere from 300 to 500 guests (depending on the source) attended the vow exchange at Bethesda-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church and up to 2,000 came to celebrate at the reception held under the state-of-the-art, specially erected tent at the golf club community, BearÍs Club. In attendance were a number of celebrities and sports stars including Patrick Ewing, Tiger Woods, Scottie Pippen and Spike Lee. And the entertainment was first-rate as well including DJ MC Lyte, singers K'Jon, Robin Thicke and Grammy-Award winner Usher and The Source, an 18-piece band. There was also a huge firework display that light up the golf course at night. We know that the 35-year-old bride, a former model, had eight bridesmaids, so it probably follows logic that groom had eight groomsmen. Wonder what he gave for groomsmen gifts? Perhaps personalized signs in honor of the Chicago Bulls, the team that made him a household name. Or, maybe a basketball inspired gift representing the Charlotte Bobcats, the NBA team of which is majority owner. If any of his groomsmen were buddies from college, he might have hooked them up with a North Carolina Tar Heels personalized pub sign in honor of the college where his basketball star shot to fame. So what other types of groomsmen gifts do you think would appeal to Jordan? Well, how about baseball inspired? Have you forgotten that after his first retirement from basketball he stunned the sports world by signing a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox, ultimately playing for the Birmingham Barons and Scottsdale Scorpions. Any guy would love to receive a personalized baseball bat engraved with his name _ especially if given my Michael Jordan. Okay, we can dream! After the wedding, sources spotted the newlyweds on their honeymoon in the islands of Greece. The pair was photographed taking in the sights of Spetses and Mykonos, walking around hand in hand. ItÍs no secret that Jordan enjoys his cigars and he was observed smoking a stogie during at least one of the sightseeing outings. That could mean that cigar gifts (such as humidors, cigar cutters, cases, and lighters) might have been given as gifts for groomsmen in his wedding-day roster. ItÍs just a guess. Groomstand.com has a fine selection of groomsmen gifts for the cigar aficionado that can be used on the wedding weekend and then kept as a treasured souvenir for many years to come. So, if you were servings as Jordan's best man or groomsman, what kind of gift would you expect? Let us know in the comments below.

Marrying Men (and a Woman) of the Month

Spring and sprung and love is suddenly in the air! Engagement news has been confirmed for a couple of bachelors and a long-time super model too. Celebrity weddings just make our hearts go aflutter (insert sarcastic tone here), we canÍt wait to see whoÍs wearing what and how over the top all the details go. Okay, we pretend that we donÍt care about which stars are getting hitched, but really we do. When a male celebrity gets engaged, it reminds us regular Joes that getting married isnÍt really that bad of a deal. Chances are the girl youÍve proposed to really loves you for you and not youÍre a-list bank account. And, when a Sports Illustrated bikini supermodel gets married, we all just sigh a collective ñwhat if.î The name of the first marrying man of the month may not instantly ring a bell, Vincent Kartheiser. HeÍs Pete Campbell, the young and sometimes spiteful-slash- impulsive ad exec, on the television ñMad Men.î Kartheiser (age 31) has been dating Alexis Bledel (age 33) since early 2012 and if you think they look like a familiar couple, your right! To two played illicit lovers, cheating on their respective spouses, on the popular AMC drama last season. Nothing says doomed choice than taking on a mentally-unstable mistress, thank goodness, itÍs not reality! The wedding announcement timing for the twosome couldnÍt be better timed; the Emmy award-winning show premiered its sixth season on April 7th. We have the perfect idea in groomsmen gifts for Pete Campbell, er Kartheiser, and that is a set of personalized bar glasses for those afternoon scotch breaks at work. Or, a snazzy, retro-sixties pair of engraved cufflinks, perhaps? And, live from New York . . . . is the announcement that Andy Samberg, funny guy and clowny crooner best known for his skits on ñSaturday Night Live,î is also engaged. Samberg (age 34) has been dating his girlfriend, Joanna Newsom, for five years. No one is quite certain when the two made the pledge to get married, but he did give his bride to be a present to seal the deal. No, not an (ahem) in a box _ but, a sparkly engagement ring that she was spotted wearing at the Indie Spirit Awards being hosted by her sweetie. Newsom is a folk singer-songwriter who actually makes music and not parody songs like Samberg. Friends say that Samberg has been a fan long before they dated; he was a groupie in nearly all of her shows! As a reminder that the couple makes strangely sweet music together, a personalized steel harmonica would make a quirky and clever choice in groomsmen gifts from this silly, SNL alum. And, apparently the divorced Elle Macpherson is set to wed her billionaire boyfriend, Jeffry Soffer. While Soffer is the ïyounger manÍ at age 43, youÍd never EVER believe that the Australian bombshell is 49 years old. The two dated and then called off the relationship last March, but then got back together after Soffer severely hurt his back in a helicopter crash. How would you like Ell Macpherson to be your nurse? Yea, thatÍs what we thought! A wedding date hasnÍt been set yet, so maybe there is still hope. Who knows what Soffer will present as groomsmen gifts, he can afford to buy a small country for each of his groomsmen. For all the millionaires, billionaires and up-and-comers, consider a symbolic choice in groomsmen gifts _ like a personalized money clip! So, what would you give as groomsmen gifts if you have the seemingly never-ending wallet of a celebrity or business tycoon?

Re-Tying the Knot - Vow Renewal Ceremonies

Looking to say “I do” again with the same woman? The trend for vow renewal ceremonies is has been on the rise in the last 10 years with some wedding vendors reporting that these recommitment ceremonies represent between five and 10 percent of their total business. A vow renewal is a great way to honor a landmark anniversary (such as 5, 10, 25 or 50), as a reaffirmation after a rocky road, or just a good excuse to celebrate your spouse and a healthy relationship. Celebrities have also popularized vow renewal ceremonies, remarrying each other in spectacular, over-the-top style. Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon renewed their vows after four years of wedding bliss, in Paris atop the Eiffel Tower nonetheless. Reality star Khloe Kardashian and her basketball playing husband Lamar Odom said “I do” again on their one year anniversary and hip-hops royal couple, Beyonce and Jay-Z kept the beat going with a wedding redo. Supermodel Heidi Klum and husband, singer Seal, were famous for their multiple vow renewal ceremonies. Each year they would have a themed party; one year it was a white trash wedding and another it was a beach wedding. But, alas, despite the high number of nuptials, the couple called it quits in 2012. The world record for the largest number of vow renewals (with the same person) is held by Lauren Lubeck Blair and David E. Hough Blair who have married each other 101 times. The lovebirds originally got married in 1984 and have been getting renewed in different locations around the world, breaking the original Guinness World Record Book of 65 in 2001. Now each time the get re-married, they are resetting the old record they previously set. If you are planning a vow renewal, the ceremony and party can be whatever you want it to be. It can be just the two of you of at favorite destination, a small casual gathering, or a large fancy affair. Some couples like to go all out on the vow renewal, especially if they now have plenty of money to celebrate in a grand fashion. You know, break out the fancy champagne, caviar and golden groomsmen gifts. Luxury cigar humidors and executive leather goods (like our Napa leather business card case) are two of our favorite gifts for groomsmen. Other couples will find it more fitting to have a laid-back event where their children or grandkids will feel comfortable. Other couples will parlay a recommitment ceremony into a vacation, check out Las Vegas, cruise ships and island resorts for easy-breezy package deals. Vow renewal ceremonies are a great way to incorporate your family into the special day. Seeing their parents reaffirm their love in a public way will set a firm foundation for their future marriage union. If still in touch, it is meaningful to include as many as the “old” wedding attendants as possible including your best man and groomsmen. How fun it might be to invite the original ring bearer and flower girl and effuse about how they are now all grown up. You may now have gained new friendships that you’d like to include in the big day. Now grown into adults or older children, your sons may ever serve in the capacity of groomsmen. Don’t forget to thank all of your attendants with groomsmen gifts to show them how special they have been all these years. GroomStand.com has an impressive selection of gifts for groomsmen that will make wonderful keepsakes of this important day. Are you considering “re-tying the knot,” how many years has it been since the original wedding day? Let us know in the comments below.

Hef is a Groom Again

Still chasing the girls like a young whippersnapper, the 88-year-old Hugh Heffner is once again set to tie the knot with his on-again, off-again girlfriend, Crystal Harris. This makes “The Hef” our Marrying Man of the Month, although we’re not entirely sure the nuptials will go off without a hitch. You see, Heffner and the 26-year-old playmate are engaged to each other for the second time around; the first engagement was broken off by the bolting bride-to-be just days before the wedding which was originally set for 2011. However, in recent months, Harris has moved back into the Playboy Mansion and the two have reportedly been spending more time together. Despite the 60+ year age disparity, Harris has mentioned in the past that “she is the one keeping up with Hef.” Sources confirm that the May-December romance will culminate with a wedding at the Playboy Mansion this New Year’s Eve with family and close friends in attendance. So, if Hef were to have a posse of groomsmen, what kind of groomsmen gifts do you think he’d give? Here are our top picks: Personalized Zippo Lighter: This is such a classic, old-school personalized groomsmen gift. We could totally see a smoking-jacket-clad Hefner passing these out to the guys. Plus, it’s pretty symbolic – the flame is guaranteed to never go out. Cigar Humidor: Think back to the days of the old Playboy Clubs; the sophisticated members would all be sitting around drinking their martinis and enjoying fine stogies. The aficionado of cigars will really appreciate having a fine-looking and highly functional storage spot to keep his smokes fresh and crush-free. Engraved Barware: We know the Hef drinks, we’ve seen him shuffling around many times with an adult beverage in hand, probably trying to self-medicate over the stress of juggling so many women. He’s done ads for Stoli and Bavaria, so he must like both vodka and beer. Presenting groomsmen gifts like engraved flasks, sets of shot glasses, or even retro cocktail shakers would be oh-so sophisticated in that rich, wrinkled, “I’m an octogenarian player” sort of way.

The Ultimate Wedding Crasher

What would you do if the President of the United States showed up on your wedding day? Well, this exact thing happened to a more-than-surprised Iowa bride and groom recently. Apparently, the leader of the free world, none other than President Barak Obama, crashed their reception to the amazement of friends, family and, especially the bride and groom. It all went down Sept 1 at the Living History Farms in Urbandale, Iowa. Oops, the venue had planned a wedding and a campaign rally both on the same day! While the rally actually ended before the wedding started, there was some overlap time as the two different events took care of pre and post party details. In a gesture of kindness, the President left a wedding gift for the couple that is sure to become a conversation starter in newlywed’s homes for many, many years to come. The prized present was a handwritten notecard signed by Obama saying “Congratulations on your wedding. Michelle and I hope you enjoy your life together.” Also, included with the sentiments was a silver-plated cup and small tray personalized with the presidential seal and his engraved name. Good to see that the President knows how thoughtful personalized gifts for the groom and bride can be – put usually these wedding gifts are engraved with the newlywed’s names! I’m sure an exception to etiquette can be made in this instance. To top it off the classy bride and groom gifts, everything was delivered in a handsome blue gift bag straight from the White House. While the President and First Lady probably aren’t going to drop by your wedding, you can still receive an official greeting from the power couple by sending an invitation to the Greetings Office at the White House. For weddings, the request should be made after the event occurs (I guess to see if you really go through with it) and the wait for a reply can take several months. Send your invitation or letter with specifics to: The White House, Greetings Office 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, D.C. 20500

Marrying Man of the Month: Ryan Reynolds

Congratulations are in order on many levels for actor and now groom, Ryan Reynolds. Not only did he tie the knot with the lovely actress Blake Lively; perhaps, more impressively, he pulled off a celebrity wedding right under the nose of the unsuspecting paparazzi. The surprise ceremony took place on Sunday, September 7, 2012 at Boone Hall Plantation in Mt. Pleasant. Interestingly, this is the same location where “The Notebook” was filmed in 2004. It wasn’t until five days later that the two filed for a marriage license in Charleston and were legally married the next day, September 14th. So why have the ceremony before the legalities? We’re assuming this was part of their covert plan to get hitched under the radar. Of course, filing public documents before the wedding would alert the press. Sources say that the “Green Lantern” actors demanded complete privacy and that most of the wedding vendors, such as the cake decorator, were kept in the dark about the duo’s identity. The 70 guests and other people associated with the shindig were required to sign non-disclosure agreements before attending the nuptials. Also, cell phones were taken up at the door to prevent unauthorized wedding photos. This was Reynolds second time at the altar; he was previously married to actress Scarlett Johannson. It seems that People Magazine’s “2010 Sexiest Man Alive” has a type -- pretty blondes. A friend of the couple, Florence Welch of the band Florence and the Machine put on a show for the newlyweds and guests at the top-secret reception. Another detail to note is that Reynolds wore a Burberry suit with leather suspenders and cufflinks. It seems he’s bringing these accessories so popular in past fashion. No word on who were his groomsmen or what was given as groomsmen gifts, although we’re sure something extremely cool.

News to Like - Zuckerberg Gets Hitched

Status update: Married. That’s the message Mark Zuckerberg sent out hours after marrying his girlfriend of eight years. Zuckerberg, the 28 year-old who took Facebook public at $104 billion a couple weeks ago, tied the knot with Priscilla Chan, a recent medical school graduate, in a surprise ceremony that to place in the backyard of their Palo Alto home. The approximate 100 guests, who initially thought they were invited to celebrate Pricilla’s graduation, were treated to a beautiful but low-key ceremony and reception. Mexican food and sushi were served from favorite restaurants and the splurge of the night was that Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day provided musical entertainment. We don’t know if there was a best man or other wedding attendants, but who cares – the couple’s dog, Beast, walked the bride down the aisle! So what does one get a filthy-stinking-rich guy as a gift for the groom? That’s no easy feat, since Zuckerberg can buy anything he darn well pleases himself. So since it would be impossible to impress this type with a new tech gadget or trendy gear, the best route to go is to present a gift for the groom that is personalized with heartfelt sentiments. This way, the groom gift will be one-of-a-kind and unique to the recipient . . . and that’s something you can’t put a price on. For millionaire and billionaire types (as well as all of us lowly thousandaire folks), we suggest personalized pen and writing gifts sets so that he can keep writing out those money making ideas. While it is low-tech to actually put real pen to paper, it does have a dashing, old-school charm that is becoming popular again with even the most ga-ga over cutting-edge gadgets. Another good choice in groom gifts (and even groomsmen gifts) is a personalized shaving set. Every guy, no matter how loaded, needs to take care of his whiskers at least a couple times a week if not daily. Just the sight of one of our shaving sets sitting on the countertop will remind even the busiest man to slow down and enjoy the process of gentlemanly grooming.

His Prerogative _ to be a Groom (again)

Probably singing “My Prerogative,” during the proposal (just a crazy guess), singer Brown and Alicia Etheridge are going to make it official after a two-year engagement. The couple, who also have a young child together, will be tying the knot as part of a business-pleasure trip to Hawaii. Brown has a Father’s Day gig in Honolulu, Hawaii and is parlaying a walk down the aisle on June 15th as part of the trip. Not a lot of details about the ceremony or guest list have been shared and most expect it to be a low-key, small affair with only family and close friends in attendance to serve as groomsmen and other members of the wedding party. On the heels of the shocking death of his ex-wife, Whitney Houston, Brown has been under the microscope with tongues clucking about his involvement in Whitney’s addiction to drugs. Breaking his silence with Matt Lauer on The Today Show, Brown responded to the accusations saying, “I didn't get high [on narcotics] before I met Whitney. I smoked weed, I drank the beer, but no, I wasn't the one that got Whitney on drugs at all ... I'm not the reason she's gone.” We’re thinking that the ever-popular personalized flask wouldn’t be an appropriate choice in groomsmen gifts and gifts for the groom at this wedding. But, maybe a personalized pen, a real luxury model, which he can use to sign all his autographs! Reportedly clean and sober today, it appears that Brown is looking forward to moving on with his life while grieving his ex in a healthy way. On June 5th, 10 days before the wedding, Brown’s first album in 14 years will be released, a compilation of his experiences and healing over the years – he performed a sneak peek of the touching single “Don’t Let Me Die” recently on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. ”

Alec Baldwin Engaged to Yoga Instructor

Looks like Alec Baldwin has made a bold move, and we’re not talking about playing ‘Words with Friends.’ Reps for the mouthy, trash-talking celeb have confirmed that the just turned 54-year-old 30 Rock actor popped the question to his 27-year-old girlfriend, Hilaria Thomas. Yes, they are getting M-A-R-R-I-E-D and that’s worth at least 9 points. While it’s the first marriage for Hilaria, it’s the second for Alec who famously divorce Kim Basinger in 2002. Thomas, who grew up in both Boston and Spain and is now owner of a yoga studio in New York, hooked up with Baldwin last year. So far, no wedding date has been released. As the oldest of the Baldwin brothers – Daniel, Billy and Stephen, all actors, we’re betting that Alec will have at least one, if not all, stand up for him in the wedding as best man and groomsmen. What would a clan of acting brothers enjoy as groomsmen gifts? Since they were all born and raised in Long Island, New York perhaps a personalized sign from a favorite New York area professional sports team – we know the elder bro is a die-hard fan of the Yankees.
